Learning disability in its world

What is learning disability?
Learning disability is a general term that describes specific kinds of learning problems, a neurological disorder. Learning disability can cause a person to have trouble learning and using certain skills.

The skills most often affected are:
Reading,
Writing,
Listening,
Speaking,
Reasoning, and
Doing math.
Learning disabilities (LD) vary from person to person. One person with learning disabilities may not have the same kind of learning problems as another person with learning disabilities. Researchers think that learning disabilities are caused by differences in how a person's brain works and how it processes information. Children with learning disabilities are not "dumb" or "lazy." In fact, they usually have average or above average intelligence. Their brains just process information differently.
There is no "cure" for learning disabilities. They are life-long. However, children with learning disabilities can be high achievers and can be taught ways to get around the learning disability. With the right help, children with learning disabilities can and do learn successfully. While some disabilities can be the result of accidents leading to paralysis, brain damage, others are genetic. For example, cerebral palsy, spina bifida, Down syndrome, muscular dystrophy, blindness, not to mention Autism, dyslexia, etc. The disabled or differently abled have a different set of emotional and physical needs which parents or careers should be mindful of.

So If you or are living/caring for someone with a disability, lets hear your experiences, whatever concerns you might have...!

  1. I personally dont think i have had any close contacts with anyone with Learning Disabilities ( LD ) ,but i believe there are lots of people experiencing these disabilities .Since the LD is genetic ,then much more emphasis must be placed into publishing critical report that will further the debate over how to strengthen the programs and policies we have in place to serve and protect individuals with learning disabilities .Especially in the developing countries like ours .Awareness must first be created for individuals, organizations, government to know that there are people living with these disabilities amongst us and required special care is needed by them also ..Yep!

  2. @ jude, very well said. I've worked with so many people living with learning disability back in the Uk, and I can tell u that have the rights, and or quality of life like any other, but same can not be said about like u said developing countries like ours, that is why it is imperative for us to help ourselves by sharing our experiences for those of us that have come in contact with, use this forum to create awareness in our little way, little things that has helped us like sharing what special diet we have tried, etc. Having said that they are organization providing holistic care in all like the voice of autism, keera foundation, children's development Centre, etc.

  3. Well we live in a society where it appears little or nothing is in place for people with LD, Awareness is paramount and our orientation about people with learning disabilities should change. I have not lived with or cared for people with these disabilities but I would to know the basics of what one should do if one come across them. And please do we have seprate schools for these people?
